Any info on gunmaker Daniel Bell,Stark co. Ohio
« on: July 10, 2009, 02:27:24 AM »
Does anyone have any info on gunmaker Daniel Bell of Stark co. Ohio. I'm also interested in how he signed his guns and what style he used. In the library I have 090106-1 that has  initials D*B on the flats and I am also located in Erie co. Ohio. Thanks for any help.

Ohio Gunsmiths and Allied Tradesmen Vol. IV (Donald Hutslar) had the following information:

"Bell,Daniel (1759 - 1866)

1859 Daniel Bell, gunsmith at Frease's Store

1860 Daniel Bell had a capital investment of $175.00 and worked alone.  For the year ending 30 June 1860, he purchased 8 gun barrels for $14, and other material for $30  He made 8 guns valued at $112
and repair work worth $450

Bell died on 14 October 1866 at the age of 71 years.  His wife Mary died on 6 February1884 aged 83years 4 months and 22 days.  Both were buried at Green Lawn Cemetery, Wilmot.  Reported: maple full stock percussion rifle, 38 caliber, 38" long barrel, brass and silver mounted, with inlays and cap box, engraved in script D. Bell."

That is all I had found, no photos.  tim

Thank you for your info. It sounds like this is not the maker of my rifle. Again, thanks for your time.

Sixsensegun,................... actually I believe it probably is your guy.  I omitted that I found that information under the Stark Co. section of Mr. Hutslar's book.  Hey sixsensegun I enjoyed looking.  tim
