Flea market find! Attn:CCF!!!
« on: October 18, 2019, 12:13:37 AM »
Sometimes it pays to be lucky. I spent my day today wading through imported Chinese flea market junk and a plenty of black composite stock guns. I look over at the far end of a table and half covered with junk is this nice little piece screaming “please get me out of here”.
Here are the stats. .34 caliber at the wore slick muzzle. 40 1/8” long with approx 1 1/2” of barrel shortened. .920 at the breech, .880 at the waist, & .905 at the muzzle.
Look at the pictures. Give me your best guess as to its origin (obviously in the south). The maker took the liberty to do a little extra decorative file work. I really like the guns’ profile. It kinda has that Whitson profile to my eyes.
Enjoy!!!

That is Really neat and from a Flea Market no less. I do like that profile and the BP. Is it nailed on?

   Thanks, Tim

Yes, and the toe plate is riveted to the butt plate. 3 ringed iron thimbles and no skirt on the entry pipe.

Really neat interesting flea market find Stoner. Look forward to seeing it in the flesh. Thanks for sharing.  Now I guess I'm gonna have to start hitting the flea markets.

You very obviously have a higher class of fleas than we have around where I live.

Nice piece, thanks for sharing!

I'm going to have to go flea marketing with you. Never seen anything other than a few tool or cast iron skillets worth looking at. Neat rifle I like the rear sight and the filed design on the trigger guard.

Nice rifle Stoner.  It may be an original KY rifle.

Good catch, Wayne!  I’ve seen that “tombstone” lock bolt washer in Dennis’ Gillespie book...but the triggerguard is certainly different. I’ll be interested to hear the experts weigh in.

My big flea market score for the year was a Howard Hill “Tembo” longbow I picked up last month for $75 bucks...

What were you doing off Stoner creek property? Nice find. I'm thinking NC for sure but I'm sure the pros here will prove me wrong. A lot to like about that gun, file work and all the stuff that's nailed on. The maker must have took one look at that trigger guard and figured it was just fine the way it was with out spending a whole day filing on it to pretty it up.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

I agree with Mike, looks western NC to me. I have seen those triggers on several late Gillespie rifles. I often wondered if someone in the area was making and selling them to other makers.

Wyane, how is the trigger plate shaped?

Dennis I'm not sure but I would guess that the trigger is a hardware store piece although your idea may be spot on. I'll have it at the Knoxville show.  I really want to get your, Randall  Pierce, and Dana's opinions. I'll bet my friend Wayne Elliott could contribute as well.

Great profile. My guess would be Robert Hughes or Whitson influence.
