Stepped Wrist
« on: October 30, 2019, 03:47:17 AM »
       I'm going to ask a dumb question, so if you must burn me down, go ahead.  What is meant by the term"stepped wrist". I've been around the right guns, for forty years off and on, but my education is seriously lacking in this regard. I will be deeply indebted to someone, that can make me understand, what is meant by, this gun has a "stepped wrist".

I am sure others can explain it better here's a slight step wrist
a step from wrist to butt stock.

Wrist has a step toward basic Butt profile. Wrist is smaller diameter then there is a graduation or step up into the Butt stock. Early profile.

Look at Honacker rifles they have a pretty pronounced step in the wrist.

The lower edge of the wrist into the butt gets a little wider, or has a "step".  A picture is worth a 1000 words.  These are just random shots, not the same gun.

Here are some pictures of a Virginia rifle by John Honaker. It has a very pronounced stepped wrist.   http://aspenshadeltd.com/inventory_hon.html

George Shumway used to use two terms;
Stepped wrist, for those as above,  (More or less definite step) and "displaced wrist"   for those where the adjustment is less abrupt.

See below;
Nobody would burn you for asking this question, T-B!

Lately the more elite have been calling it a stepped butt or stepped toe. I don't know  why.

          Ok, thanks gents. I get it, I've seen this on rifles, just never realized, that's what people were talking about. Thanks again, you responders. Sometimes the obvious totally escapes me.

When a reenactor says "They didn't write everything down"   what that really means is: "I'm too lazy to look for documentation."

Stepped toe is rather misleading I'd say.
The toe is the toe, not the full length of the underside of the buttstock. Makes no sense to me.
The step is at the wrist end,...not the toe.

Looks like a stepped toe would start about and inch from the buttplate.
