Easy metal finish for a Kibler SMR?

I'm finishing up my Kibler SMR kit this weekend. Wood has its first couple coats of oil, and the metal is getting some finishing touches this evening.

I'm hoping to end up with a some sort of gray finish in the end result. And ideally id like to do it without having to order anything.

Would it be an absolute disgrace to hit the metal with some cold blue and buff it back with some scotch Brite or steel wool? I tested a piece of barrel flat on the bottom and it looks alright to me.

I've heard of mustard, vinegar, and a couple others. Not wanting to get into boiling bleach or charcoal bluing.

Any advice? I appreciate it fellas!

Jim has a video where he uses a brass tarnishing chemical to brown/antique the metal parts,I am planning on trying it when I receive my Kibler kit. I don't remember the name but supposedly you can buy it on historichouseparts.com although I was unable to find it on their website. I would love to hear about other members who have tried that method although if Jim uses it that speaks volumes! Nice job on the finish! what kind of wood?

Thanks Prospector! It's "fancy walnut" the first upgrade.

I just sanded it to 220 and rubbed on some Tried and True Varnish Oil. First time using it and I really like the stuff so far.

The cold blue/buff you describe is fine, I have used it and others here on ALR do the same thing. Have at it :)

Plum brown works good and fast.Don't get in a hurry or set deadlines! Relax and enjoy the experience. Go borrow a gun if you want to shoot
