Iron mounted ready for PA flintlock season
« on: December 25, 2019, 04:20:08 AM »

My nephew shot this gun in Thanksgiving. Now he'll get to hunt with it Thursday our first day of flintlock here in Pa. He has not seen it since Thanksgiving.           Steve

Looks like the same buttplate and triggerguard I'm using on my iron .50cal. How did you finish off the steel? I've had nice results with cold browning to a slight pitting, steel wool back to metal, cold bluing, and rubbing back again with scotchbite.

Thanks for comments. Smokepole, trigger guard is from Track of the Wolf, waited 3 months for someone to forge trigger guard , never materialized, went to Track. Butt plate is forged. Ten applications of Laurel Mt. Forge in cellar with wood stove and sweat box, every 12 hrs. No " knocking back "rust in between applications. Then sand paper rust off, apply Brownells cold blue let dry and steel wool the #&** out of it. Really wasn't the look I was looking for. Wanted a more gray look, ended up with this, not disappointed but still trying to find recipe for aged gray. I am guessing I did not sand rust back enough , next time.  Steve

Nice, clean looking rifle, Steve.  I really like the finish on the stock, and a really nice piece of wood.

For a more grey look, you might want to try a maroon Scotch Brite pad with a bit of oil (like motor oil) to rub back the cold blue.

Good luck hunting!

It is a beautiful rifle. You should be proud! Instead of all that hand sanding (tedious) try a wire wheel on your drill press to remove the heavy rust. Do it lightly and the pits will remain.

Al , got the wood from Dunlap. Think grade was 6 not sure. It is red maple ( not soft) and yes I do like the figure got lucky. Price was $225.00, got it at Lewisburg show.
