Inletting First Lug-Style Single Trigger
« on: December 14, 2019, 01:30:39 PM »
Hello,
I bought an R.E. Davis lug style single trigger for use on my first pre-carve build. I have installed simple triggers in which the plate and trigger are separate on two previous kit builds, but this is my first experience with this style in which the trigger is pinned to a lug that is part of the plate itself. The trigger arrived already assembled, and the pivot pin appears to be peened in place. My question is, does it need to be disassembled so that the plate and lug can first be inlet before the slot for the trigger is cut into the bottom of the stock? If so, am I correct in thinking that the correct procedure would be to 1) drill out the pin, 2) inlet the plate by itself, 3) cut a slot in the stock for the trigger bar, then 4) replace the trigger and re-install and peen the pin?

Thanks in advance.
Jay

Hi Jay,
The pin should not be peened. You should be able to tap it out.  I cut my trigger slot first because I want the trigger to determine its position not the plate. Then I position and inlet the plate, however, you hopefully have a good drawing of your gun so you can make sure that your tang bolt will intercept the trigger plate such that it can be drilled and tapped. Although I don't do it, it would be easy to inlet the whole assembly together. Just cut a slot for the trigger, then put the assembly on the stock with the trigger in the slot, trace, and inlet. I just find that trigger plates often need to be bent to fit the stock profile and that is easier to do without the trigger installed.

I'm not a fan of these, since the ones I've seen have the trigger pinned at a location which IMO doesn't allow for the best trigger adjustment . I prefer a higher pin location, which gives me a lighter pull.  Having a lug which would allow this would require removing too much wood.  Just my 2 cents before you actually inlet the thing.

All good advice. On the odd chance it IS pinned in place, I’d file the lug on each side till all is level then drive the pin out. No need to drill.

I've hung triggers to replace that set up for quite a few people. A trigger hung higher gives a superior trigger pull.
