Deer Hove knife era

This week there was a post to Contemporary Makers Blog concerning a "southern knife" that was of deer hove and pewter construction.

Kind of neat really, I thought! 

Did not see nor could I find any info on the style in my brief search on the net.

Any of you on the forum have any insights as to time frame when this style was popular?  My guess would be late flint or early percussion.

No idea what era, but deer hoof is in reference to the shape of the wooden handle in this case. I have an old knife with a real hoof on the handle and hair on the bone. I’m pretty sure it’s European. I don’t know how old it is either. Sorry I can’t help you.

With real deer hoof handles, they were and are made in Germany still.  (Roe  deer) I had one as a lad.

No idea when it was made except that I doubt that it was before 1800.

It’s very cool, and very reminiscent of a fancy poured pewter nosecap.
