Wanting to build a companion Pistol for my long rifle
« on: January 03, 2020, 11:35:21 PM »
Finished a Kibler Colonial last year in .54 caliber.
Was thinking about trying my hand at a pistol of the same caliber for a companion .
Would like it to be of the same time period.
Do any of you have any suggestions.
Looking for a kit, and as simple as possible as I am still a greenhorn with limited, but good tools.
Thanks, Y"all were very helpful in my rifle build

I would say a Scottish pistol, something to go with your kilt. ;)

I was looking at the Chambers Kentucky pistol kit.
Anyone have an opinion, anyone built one?

I have not built one, but I have heard nothing but good things about them.

Kilted Cowboy, you might want to consider the Colonial Pistol kit from Cabin Creek Muzzleloading in York County,PA. I think it will fit your time period very nicely. Their kits are high quality.

Moravian Gunmaking II has a really good colonial era pistol shown. I used it as a stock pattern for my pistol. I was shooting one made by a friend in matches a friend runs but it was 54 and my rifle a 50. Then I had this small Siler lock and..... I made it a little plainer.
Just be SURE you get a hard piece of Maple. MLB Supply is a great source for pistol parts. But I get my wood from Dunlap or other eastern supplier.

I would second the Cabin Creek Colonial pistol. I used a buttcap and thimbles from Cabin Creek for my William Antes pistol build. Their parts are first rate. Great people to deal with.

That cabin creek pistol looks nice.
I have to decide between the Chambers and the Cabin Creek.
I am leaning towards the cabin creek.
Anyone built either?

I did not build the pistol kit. I did build the PA Mountain Rifle kit. A Quality kit (with a capital Q).

They both are quality component sets. Chambers is less expensive and comes with a 13" octagon swamped barrel.  Cabin Creek's is a little more money and comes with an 8 3/4" Octagon to round swamped barrel.   The other components appear to be similar.  Both folks are great to deal with.
