Choice of cold blue formula
« on: January 08, 2020, 11:50:06 PM »
I'm in the process of cleaning up and reconditioning my GPR. The metal has previously been finished with birchwood casey plum brown but I'm going to a cold blue finish this time around (not looking for browning suggestions).

What, in your collective experience is the better cold blue formula?

I buy Brownells  Dichphan by the quart.  Do not over polish, I lightly sandblast.  Apply with green scotchbrite.  When the color evens out apply more with clean cotton.  Burnish with steel wool and more dichphan.  Oil.

I've used Birchwood Casey cold blue liquid for ever. Great success as long as you are meticulous cleaning the parts to be blued. I do a minimum of 4 coats, usually 6.

Brownells Oxpho Blue, apply a couple of coats, then pour boiling water over the part, then apply oil while it warm, works great
only flintlocks remain interesting..

Rust blue is so easy and durable, why not go that route?

Birchwood Casey Plum Brown will turn blue if boiled!

I did a test on the underside of the barrel and didn't like it.  Decided to polish all the parts out and stay "in the white".   Kinda looking forward to watching it age.

Never would have thought of that, Fred. Thanks for bringing that up.
