Lathe chucks

Not sure if this is the correct forum for this question. I use the lathe to build accoutrements so it seemed appropriate. If not, will one of the moderators move it.

New lathe: Laguna Revo 1216. Amazing speed control, 50 to 3300 rpms. 1"-8 spindle threads.

I'm looking at a Nova chuck, but just don't know much about them. Main use would be for turning base plugs for horns... So I would probably need at least 3" to 4"capacity for rough blanks.

Am I on the right track with Nova?

I have 4 different chucks that I use. The one that I use the most is from Craft Supplies ( woodturnerscatalog.com) It's the apprentice 4 jaw 8 piece. It has 4 different sets of jaws. I can use it for almost everything I turn. I do have a Nova chuck and they are very good chucks.

  I use this Nova Midi for all my horn work. Not sure about the jaws size, these are about 1 " closed and
 1 1/2" open, I can turn any size butt I want with it. You can buy other jaws for it if needed. I do not think you will go wrong with one.

I use a 4 jaw chuck on my wood lathe. It is not a Nova, maybe a "wood river" or something from Woodcraft supply.  It was a lot cheaper and has been totally satisfactory. It came with 2 sets of jaws. It will hold anything, inside or out, from super small up to about 4 inches or better. Anything bigger I use a faceplate.

When you buy/order your chuck, make sure you include a pen turners mandrel. Morse taper, straight shaft and spacers. For making applied tips, you will wonder how you ever did without one.

The Nova chucks are very high quality and have a lot of accessory jaws available. I have 2 and have been very satisfied.

I have several Nova chucks with different size jaws, got tired changing jaws,  Turn most butt plugs between centers, may finish on chuck

I also  have a nova chuck.   The only thing I don’t like about it is the shorter jaw travel. For awhile I was borrowing a friends Chuck and I could put a 4 inch piece of wood in it and turn it down to fit the horn then flip it around and finish the endcap. With the nova, I’ve had to use a workaround to do this.  I had some round 1 1/2”  oak stock that I cut in short lengths and glue onto my project wood. So I chuck up the round stock and turn the larger piece down to my liking then I can flip it around and finish it, cutting off the oak support piece.
