First bag...of many?!
« on: January 30, 2020, 01:00:39 AM »
Greetings all from the PacNW!

Trapping lead me to tanning and making things with fur, which lead to brain tan (Indian tan) buckskin, which led to black powder which led to.....well, I've been pretty excited about getting into this way of life....errrr hobby...errr way of life....anyways, just finished my first bag and not sure if its PC or HC, just followed Ken Scott and used a beaver tail from a beaver I had trapped, first actual leather worked project I've ever done, time will tell if I pursue this incredible craft of bag making....looking forward to learning more and thanks to all the artisians and history buffs here that have made this forum interesting!

Welcome Jimmie!  This might be your first shooting bag, but it’s obvious this isn’t your first rodeo!  Great looking work!  I like your idea of using the beaver tail as an inlay...I’ve seen the whole tail used as a flap before, don’t think I’ve seen one like this.  Cool bag!

Good grief. If thats the first bag you ever made, id like to see what you can do a few bags down the road!  The first bag i ever made worked fine but it wasn't Art!

Nice work......Lynn

Some people just have it from the beginning and you're obviously one of them.  Your stitching is very neat and crisp.  Good job!

Nice work. I agree with the others, if that's a first bag, I would definitely suggest pursuing the craft of bag making.

Thank you for the welcome and wow, am humbled by the responses!  Thank-you so much!  Maybe this'll be my niche, I definitely know powder horn making isn't...haha...currently building my first rifle kit, so from the encouragement of y'all, I will definitely be looking more into the history and periods of the bags!

It may be your first bag, but that stitching says you've made some leather items.  :-)   That is a beautiful bag.  I wish my first one was that accomplished.   God Bless,   Marc
