Added wood

Has anyone added a little wood ( an inch or two) to the bottom of the stock, to achieve the profile of the butt they want?

RCA 17 has a walnut strip added to the cheek piece and bottom of the stock where a toepiece would normally go. photos before and after staining. Stock I used was cherry with walnut strips. I realize you are probably talking about adding a like kind of wood but the contrast was neat for this gun.

I have seen a good number of original golden age rifles with wood added to get the profile they needed for their build. They didn't waste much.

There is a very unusual Revolutionary period long rifle, which has been posted here in the past, that has a rather large piece of wood on the bottom of the butt, pegged and glued on.  Whether it was done originally, or as a repair, I have no idea.

Personally, I do not believe that the walnut pieces were original to RCA #17.  I think they were probably added when the comb and cheekpiece were knocked down.
