Rifle shoppe Manton lock completed
« on: July 31, 2009, 11:58:46 PM »
Hey folks,
Been working on this since I got back from Dixon's (got the castings already cleaned up on Ebay a couple weeks ago).  This is Rifle Shoppe's Joe Manton 558 set.  It took about 20 hours to assemble and tune, would have taken much longer if I'd done the cleanup on them.  Castings are rough as is, and many parts require heating and bending so they fit right.  It sparks right into the pan, but I think I need to temper the frizzen a little softer.  With ghosted internals there's very little friction, so even with stiff springs it's really smooth.  Don't know what I'm going to do with it yet, any thoughts?

It definitely helps to have a few Siler's under your belt before building a TRS set.
-Eric

Hi Eric,
Nice to have you back posting on the board.  It looks like a good lock and you did a very nice job.  If it were mine, I would file off all the cast-in engraving and engrave it myself.  It would be a nice lock for an English sporting gun or rifle, or perhaps a late flintlock long rifle.

That's nice work. That would work real well on something similar to the whale tail rifle or the Whiteside rifle pictured in the Library.

God bless
