In-letting a patchbox
« on: February 24, 2020, 01:03:51 AM »
I am working on a 4-piece Vincent patchbox.  I was thinking of temporarily soldering or gluing it into one piece for in-letting.  Any opinions on this idea?

I would fear cleaning the solder off those mating edges without creating some distortions.
I'd just start with the finial and lid and reference the other pieces off those two.

I should have been more clear.  I posted the previous picture to show what box I am working on.  It is already stuck to a piece of wood. I did this to shape the parts so they flow together.

Now, I could solder tabs on the top side to keep them in position while in inlet the box.  Releasing the glue only requires a heat gun.

OR, I could inlet each piece separately.

Which plan is most likely  to give the best result?

I’d do them one at a time, starting with the finial & lid.  I personally don’t see any advantage to soldering / glueing them together, other than extra work.

Hi,
As Ed says.  It will be much easier to do each piece separately.

Yup!  Finial (head) first, then the lid, then the side pieces and finally, the tail piece.  Initial layout is vital.

Usually the finial has a screw on center and when first starting out, I screw the finial down using the center screw and form the annealed finial to the stock. Then the lid is inlet and finally the 2 side pieces. The holes for the remainder of the screws are drilled and ctsk after inletting is done......Fred

I could not stand leaving the hinge historically incorrect.  I think it  looks better and will inlet cleaner without the hinge knuckle on the perimeter.

After looking at the entire Pbox, a few questions arise....will the piece that's on the opposite end from the finial push the Pbox too far forward? The finial is quite wide and will have to be formed to the area of the wrist  and comb juncture {baluster} and this might be difficult.....most finials are much more narrow towards the front, eg...daisy head or the one shown....Fred
