Kibler SMR mod
« on: March 08, 2020, 08:05:41 PM »
Jim has me thinking about getting another.  Although the 46" barrel is unique and cool, I find it awkward.  Has anyone shortened one to around 42"?  How did it work out?

It’ll throw your middle pipe way off center, and you’ll lose most of your muzzle flare but all the wood you’ll need is there, and there shouldn’t be any technical problems doing it. My only thought is it may be too light out on the muzzle to off hand if your not super steady. Doable.

A quick measurement on mine shows you’ll probably have to cut at least 4.5” and likely 4.75” to fully get past the inlet for the end pipe.

One could cover the front pipe inlet with a nose cap.  The forward pipe would be moved.  I would probably center up the middle pipe and patch the stock.   The muzzle flair  would remain, only 0.025" would be lost.   Mine is a 36 cal.  I had a 45 and liked the balance just fine.  The 45 being lighter would shift the center of gravity aft.  How that would compare to a 42" 36 cal I have no idea.

Shortening the barrel will really move weight back, due to losing most of the front flare, along with the shortening.

Also due to removing the flare it will require that your front sight be much taller.
