have this iron guard, not sure what type of toilet seat hinge pot metal it was cast from,,heat it bright red to bend it..and all it does is spring back, even hold it until its somewhat cool.and it still springs back..heated the entire guard red and let it cool but, for what ever reason it wont play, maybe not enough heat?

Is that a red heat as it appears in a dark room, or in daylight?  Can you get it to orange?

Gary, when it gets to orange, hold it at that color for a few minutes, then let it cool naturally  Use a MAPP gas cylinder.

used Mapp gas , ill try more heat its a guard for a pistol and needs quite a bit of bend

Best I've found is to bury the piece in lime, in a metal container that can go in a forge. Heat  to cherry red, hold it there for twenty minutes, then bury the thing in the forge coke, let cool overnight in the forge. That will usually anneal a piece of stubborn steel, as long as it isn't blister steel.

Never heard of this before.  Pot metal melts at about 800° F. that's not even red hot. Even High speed steel will bend at a red heat.
