McInturff Tennessee Mountain Rifle

Here is the latest TN rifle I have turned up.  The barrel is 44.5 inches, as forged, with “J.M” on the top flat. The caliber measures right at .36. The stock is full length walnut. The buttplate, triggerguard and toe plate are all hand forged iron. The pipes and side plate are brass.  The percussion lock is marked “Mitchell - Warranted”. Total length is 60 inches. It is attributed to one of the J. McInturffs of Unicoi County, TN.

Nice rifle Adam. Looking at the nose cap it looks like it has pewter poured in the end. Is that true or am I seeing things?

Great question. A few things helped attribute it to the McInturffs. The “J.M.” barrel marking is identical to the marking on the John McInturff attributed rifle on page 56 of Dave Byrd’s “Gunmakers of Buffalo Valley and Greasy Cove in Unicoi Co TN”.  I actually have a forged barrel that is marked this way as well. Also, the architecture and mountings are nearly identical to the one known signed Christopher McInturff rifle and the early iron mounted Laban McInturff rifles. Lastly, Dave Byrd examined it and gave the attribution as well. Sorry for my extremely late reply!

Is that a clean out on the drum? Or just for a wrench to tighten the drum in place.

The drum doesn’t have a clean out. It just has the lug that allows the drum to be turned with a wrench.
