Iron Nitrate and LMF
« on: March 30, 2020, 08:09:47 PM »
Hello,
I'm getting closer to the end of my first precarve build and am starting to think about finishes. I have used Laural Mountain Forge stains on two kits in the past and like it, but would like to try using some iron nitrate to accentuate the curl in the maple stock on this one. My question is, can the iron nitrate be used to enhance the curl while still using LMF to control the overall color of finish? If so, in what order would you recommend applying each?

Thanks,
Jay

I went with the iron nitrate first and followed with LMF Lancaster maple on my last project.

Same but I used tannic acid as well. LMF/LM right over the top.

Hi Jay,
Use ferric nitrate first and blush it with heat after drying and then apply LMF if you want a different color.  But first apply the ferric nitrate and see if you want anything else on top.

Wayne, that’s a gorgeous rifle...I like everything about it!  Thanks for the tip on the LMF stain over walnut...I might just give that a try.

Laurel Mountain Forge - a supplier of stains and finishes for we nutty longrifle builders.  Quite a few suppliers carry their products.

I also recommend a coat or two of tannic acid before the iron nitrate. LMF is good for exactly what you’re trying to do.
