Threaded Butt Plug
« on: April 08, 2020, 12:39:15 AM »
Followed the pics of the two original horns on this site last week. Had not done one in awhile. Used some scrap hard maple, takes the threads a little better. This one is 3/4 x 10. Turned horn tip in the style on one of the original  horns from the discussion.

Very nice. Ron. I have an old horn that the threaded finial is gone. A bit of the threads can still be seen. A piece of wood was stuck in the hole when I got it years ago. It came out of a collection in Va.

Very nice work.  It is hard to get clean, sharp threads on the plug.

What a beautiful little horn.  Especially that crisp threading.

Did you decide to add the band?   If so, how about an update photo.

If my horns weren't already multiplying like jackrabbits, it'd look nice at my house.   :-)

Not that it looked bad without it, nice addition. Now use the same architecture and add 2 bands, 3 bands, etc... Each one will be Beautiful in itself. Nice work Ron, all around. This is fun isn't it.

A quick comment on plug design vs. the original. This screw-out knob seems to have a flush fit with the inner surface. The inner surface should be tapered down into a shallow funnel, and the actual contact between the screw-in knob and the base funnel is ONLY around the outer edges, not the entire surface. I think that was done to give a tighter closure...and during use, the smaller contact area between the two surfaces would wear more easily to seal/remove any slight unevenness or swelling/warping.

Tanselman,

I doubt if what I am doing is HC and I get what you are describing with the tapered seat for the base plug.  I put a threaded "cascabel" on every horn I make and turn a recess in the base plug to retain a leather washer.  They seem to seal the threaded part well and are easily replaced if the leather gets old or dry.

I am positively no expert on horns, but I recall being told the funnel shaped recess also aided filling the horn quickly.  This, in a martial environment, would allow for individual horns to be refilled more quickly from the unit's powder supply.

In any event, that is one cool little horn from Ron, with fine craftsmanship.
