This is a project that I've posted bits and pieces of.It represents an English Blunderbuss that was restocked in Lancaster and went west during the fur trade.It pushed me to try some things I had'nt done before in the flip out bayonet and the faux striping.I rough forged the bayonet and then cleaned it up with my milling machine and files.The stock was stained with a 10% nitric acid solution with no iron added and stripped with India ink using a hand cut striping brush to match a Leman rifle in my collection.It sports a .75 caliber Getz Blunderbuss barrel.The client was very patient while I worked out the details and perfected my skills.It was a fun and challenging project and we are both pleased with the results.A special thanks to my friend Eric Fleisher who hardened and tempered the bayonet.Glad to answer any questions.

Very nice work there. You only very occasionally see a b/bs with a patchbox but it looks good and your story has got it covered. You got the spring bayonet spot on.Normally the stock would stop short of the first ring .

Are those barrels a stock item or can they be ordered?? I could see myself putting one of those together

sans bayonet though.

There were many things about this build which were a bit of fantasy.Not something I normally do but it was fun to egt outside my comfort zone.

The barrel was made by John Getz and he is capable of making another ,whether you can talk him into it is another matter.I actually purchased this one in the secondary market from the estate of a friend who passed away.I know Ed rayl does one from time to time.

I just wanted to congratulate you on a terrific job on this blunderbuss. While I have built a few myself, I haven't yet had the stamina to go all the way with a spring loaded bayonet like you and Runastav have. Outstanding work.....and I love the patch box on it !

Did you have any issues with fitting the lock to the barrel? I'm thinking interference with the mainspring from the larger than usual breech dimensions. Also did you have to relieve the barrel to fit the front side nail?
I've got a few antique brass b/buss barrels .If I was to restock them looks like I'd need a pretty big lock.

I used the plain ole 44201,I found the other to be too dark and did'nt match up with the original.

I did'nt have any issues with the mainspring interfering although it was pretty close.The Chambers lock works very well with large breach barrels.I did have to slightly groove the barrel for the front 8/32 lock nail though .It helped a lot that Dave Rase perfectly inlet the barrel and ran the RR hole.

The folding bayonet would make for an excellent prod to reinforce a couth manner!
