Installing a Chambers WL Insert in a Lyman?

Installing one of these is a priority for my Deerstalker after reading all the rave reviews on threads.

While watching Bill Raby's Fusil build series he outlines the installation of an insert.  He points out the burrs and the insert set into the barrel. I never considered this. Of course the Lyman has a patent breech but forewarned is forearmed.

While researching solving this it turned up over and over not to pull a Lyman breech plug. Taylor detailed a bad insert fix for a GPR I think.  He did not pull the plug by using a mill before drilling and tapping.  I'm not daft enough to think because Taylor did it I can!

Edit: I've dropped this idea.  Has anyone ever pulled a Lyman patent plug successfully? Bill polished the obstructions from the breech end.

How have smiths installed a Chambers WL insert in a Lyman breech?

I have pulled a couple.  They were percussion.  I use a real hydraulic barrel vice for all breech plugs.  I use steel V-blocks lined with business card stock ont octagonal barrels.  I also machined closely fitted aluminum wrench jaws for the breech plug.  Those were held in place by a real action wrench and snugged with 12" NF bolts.  Overkill?  Maybe but I do not mess up the finish or maul the metal.  They were pretty tight.

I opened up the patent breech chamber  and flame channel.  The owner reported good results at first then unreliable as usual.  Isuspect oil pooling in the  breech between shooting sessions.

Regarding the WL liner.  I suspect he Lyman is metric thread so you would have to re tap it.  Try opening the touch hole up to 1/16" first.

Thank you, I will not be pulling any breech plugs.  It is a recipe for a ruined gun!

Have you tried the standard RMC liner with the hex?

Tried one of these years ago, probably made by someone else, never got the quick ignition I get from the liners from Jim Chambers.
