Trigger guard with sling swivel
« on: April 29, 2020, 07:18:48 PM »
I am looking for photos of sling swivels mounted to trigger guards. I need to modify my guard some would like to see some examples before I proceed.

Thanks!

Lots of books out there with examples of originals.

Say, any of you boys smithies? Or, if not smithies per se, were you otherwise trained in the metallurgic arts before straitened circumstances forced you into a life of aimless wanderin'?

Military guns were frequently fitted with sling swivels through the front of the bow of the guard.  Here are three examples:  a Baker rifle and two Brown Bess muskets.

Slap my face and call me Cordwainer, but don't trigger guards generally have that little swell where the front of the bow meets the base of guard so a hole can be drilled?
That's mostly on older rifles....right??

Thanks

When they don't I do this.

One more trick. Saw off the front lug that’s used to pin the guard in place. Drill a few holes then file a rectangular slot in the guard front extension in front of the bow. From 1/4” flat brass stock file a swivel hanger thingamabob. It replaces that front lug and holds the front end of the guard up and you hang a swivel from it. Not to scale.

Hi Brian,
Here is my modification of a civilian guard to mount a swivel for an officer's fusil.  Keep in mind, part of my design was meant to fix the casting, which broke in front of the bow but the basic idea is an option for you.

Let me identify the pieces for you in the first photo.  The lug with threaded post in front of the guard bow is the boss through which the swivel screw will go.  It goes through a hole in the front extension of the guard and the lug, shown below and to the right of the bow, is drilled and tapped to receive the threaded post like a nut.  It also doubles as the forward lug for the guard anchoring it to the stock.  The sheet brass plate is a spline that connects the forward extension to the bow and is soldered to the forward extension and the forward curl of the bow. The assembly withe the swivel boss is soldered together and then a brass rivet is drilled through the swivel boss above the swivel screw hole and into the bow and peened in place.  A second brass rivet is drilled through the spline plate and the forward curl of the bow and peened.  The assembly seems to be very strong and looks like several original guns.
