Grinder set-up for rough shaping gravers
« on: April 29, 2020, 06:01:44 AM »
I use the Lindsey sharpening templates to shape and sharpen my graver bits, but working a square HSS lathe bit down to size by hand is a lot of work, even with good diamond stones.  So I rigged up a grinder to speed up the rough shaping work.  The offset from the fixture to the side of the grinding wheel is the 1/2" the Lindsey system calls for.  I dunk the graver in water often to keep it cool.  Once I have the graver about 90% shaped, I switch to the diamond stones and finish sharpening the graver by hand.

What a great idea Ron!  I just might try that.  I have several vintage hand crank grinders that you can run slow enough that the tool won't overheat if you are careful.

At Tom Curran's engraving class last fall at Canter's Cave, Ron was using such a system and it really worked well.  It is a lot better time saving option than investing several hundred dollars in a commercial system for sharpening gravers; especially if you are not a professional engraver.  That's one of the good tips I got from Ron.  Another is Woodford Reserve ;).

It's the same one Don.  Tom asked me for some pictures, so I thought I would post them here too.

Nice tip, Ron!  I definitely need to build one for my grinder...like you said, the initial shaping by hand power is a bit time consuming!

Great idea!  It is a pain to take off all the excess metal by hand....
