“C” -weight barrel for a York?

Hey guys,

I haven’t been writing much lately, just kind of loitering.  But my new Rice barrel arrived the other day after a bit of a wait, and it is a beauty.  Golden Age, 48”, C-weight in .50, smoothbore. 
So, my question to the knowledgeable ones here is this.  Would a 48” C-weight barrel in .50 be considered a bit too hefty for an Early York style rifle?  Thanks boys.

In my opinion, yes.  A "B" weight would be more appropriate.

Thanks Smallpatch.  I kind of thought so.  Those Yorks are so slender and graceful.  A fat heavy barrel is just wrong for the profile, but I wanted some objective, and experienced opinion.

Some early York rifles such as Schroyer-attributed rifles in Rifles of Colonial America have D weight barrels. #92 is 1 and 1/8” at the breech. Huge wide buttplate. A very big gun similar in size to Christians Spring rifles. Few builders delve into the early York guns.

Don't know about a York- but Taylor's Virginia rifle has a "C" weight bl. in .50 cal. It's a skookum rifle.

skookum = heavy or solid or has some weight. It holds beautifully though.

Skookum is a British Columbia word meaning robust, solid, healthy, big.  I prefer to refer to my rifle as voluptuous.  She weighs 10 pounds, but is my favourite offhand rifle.
