Why you remove the breech plug to install a vent liner
« on: May 05, 2020, 03:25:52 PM »

I know this info is old hat for many of you so this is for the newer builders. I was reading one of the post recently and the question was asked do you pull the breech plug when installing a vent liner. The answer is yes and here’s why. In the pictures I have installed a  5/16” White Lightning touch hole liner in a 1” at the breech 54 caliber barrel. You can see that the vent liner protrudes into the bore by just a hair but is enough to keep a cleaning jag from reaching the face of the breech. I ground the vent liner flush to the largest ID of the bore which also removes the rifling at the vent liner location. Doing this instead of grinding the liner flush with the lands of the rifling removes any chance for fowling to build up at the vent liner. I hope you can see this in the pictures.

Jim, thanks posting these photos. This should help a lot of new folks to understand this process.

Hi Jim, yes it is old hat to old heads :D. But you are dead on that a lot of "new heads" have never had the chance to see it done well. Good photos too! Really illustrate what you are meaning clearly.

Wish I was over there in the shop with you today instead of on the job here. My best to you and Celeste.
