friendly warning

For those of you who have yet to learn, on L&R locks if you put the stirrup in backwards it will usually break the tumbler or the stirrup. SO THIMK..   Been there done that more than once.

Jerry,

My father used to say, "The first time the mule kicks you it's the mules fault."
I only had to break one.  I have lost a few fly's though !

Haven't seen you in a long time.  Too long.

It's also easy to reverse the fly on an L&R Late English lock.

Not familiar with that exact lock but I don’t think it’s possible to reverse a fly. Am I missing something?

Can we either have a picture or drawing of the correct position?

You can reverse a fly on a L&R and it cam result in a broken tumbler notch or a sear nose.

The stirrup is a 'S' shape facing the tumbler when it is correctly positioned. The fly needs to form a ramp that allows the tip of the sear to clear the half cock notch when in
Firing motion.

I am taking that the stirrup should be installed with this side up on a right hand lock with the muzzle of the rifle being to the left if the arrow.

Simple way to solve this issue is to clean the stirrup with a Qtip doused with alcohol let it dry. Then coat the stirrup with a red sharpie. As far as the fly goes. on the Manton and Durrs Egg lock you want the tip to point down towards the bottom of lock.

Yes , thats how i install them in my l&R locks.
It looks like you had a failure on that one strechman. From the wear on the top side it appears that it was installed correctly.
If the stirrup was turned the other way, the notches in the tumbler and spring would have to be deeper to allow full compression on full cock.
I had to replace a stirrup last year, can't remember what it was on but i had to make more clearance on the tumbler to get it to cycle properly without binding

The stirrup should be inserted so it looks like a "S" not a "Z".

The first L&R lock I ever used, I took a picture of each stage of the disassembly when I took it apart to polish it.  Saved me a lot of headaches I reckon.

Jerry...Thanks for the heads up on the stirrup position. I remember a friend of my dad’s telling me the same story, but thats been over thirty years ago.

I found out about the stirrup direction but I didn't force it so nothing broke. The fly fell out so I didn't see which wat it went back in so I tried both but as I am still building the rifle, no trigger yet. So when operating it I damaged the sear. New one on order. Here is a picture they sent from L&R.
