Hess NC Artillery Horn - Exceeding Expectations
« on: June 16, 2020, 10:55:16 PM »
Hi Folks,

In the mail today I received a horn from Ron Hess.  The subject line above says it all.  It's an beautiful recreation of the original North Carolina Surry County Artillery horn.  The original was up for sale recently, and I have included a couple of photos for comparison.

The horn appears in Jay's book, and he guessed it was a Virginia horn (due to base plug shape) with an NC connection, but others believe it to be an NC horn.  Surry County was misspelled "Sorray" on the original.  The original owner's name was John Sayler, and it is so marked.  From my research there were two Revolutionary War NC line artillery units, but neither were founded in Surrey County, so it is probably the owner's home county. Anyone with information on John Sayler and his unit would be appreciated.

I hope you all enjoy it as much as I do.  Ron did an exceptional job all the way around.  My apologies for the photos, as they do not really capture the rich colors.

God Bless,   Marc

I love it and you should be very proud to be the caretaker of this fine horn.

Looks like a spot-on perfect copy, to me.  Very nicely done, the engraving is so crisp and clean!
