Knife Project...Final Finish & Dressed Up

Hint of another knife project...deer antler with ball starter.

First time I've used Potassium Permanganate to stain antler.  Brush on and in 2-3 minutes stain turns from violet to brown.  This is just one application so I'll try more to see what I get.

Second stain with a little wax after all dried. This is the effect I've been looking for!  Little white specks are from my paper towel adding wax. Throwing out my Tea Stain:)  Now the easy part of forging out a blade...tippit

Love the color, so where do you get Potassiom Permanganate?

Amazon.  Do a search on YouTube to see how to use it and wear gloves as it will stain your hands too.

I used potassium permanganate years ago but found that it faded badly with time (and indoors time at that). What has been your experience?

For a ball starter, I make a hollow in the end so it can't skid off the ball when pushing down.

Very uniform, almost too much so. I am looking forward to the pictures of the final project as I'm sure this will look different by then. Also interested to see how this works on your bear bone knife handles. I like the tea stain on those, even with the antler, a side by side comparison picture of one tea stained and one done this way would be cool to see.

Forged this blade for the stained deer antler handle....ready for poured pewter bolster.  I tried to get the curve of the blade to flow with the curve of the antler...tippit

Just finished the pewter bolster.  I think I'm finished unless I re-stain the antler all chocolate brown with potassium permanganate Or maybe tea stain the entire knife to antique the the blade & pewter?  Give me some opinions...tippit

I like how this turned out. I would do as Richard suggested and make a depression in the end for the ball starter, and then do your teas stain over the entire knife. Think it will be a great look.

It's sitting in a tea bath right now as the pewter is just too bright.  Nothing harsh and no vinegar just trying to dull it a bit.

The Tea Bath did the trick for me...dulled the pewter & blade plus muted the antler where it was ground at the bolster.  Dressed up in a friends quill smoked sheath along with my Brian Selb 54 cal Hawkin.  Thanks for watching the Project...tippit
