Shot Snake
« on: June 24, 2020, 11:32:50 PM »
I’ve been wanting to make one of these for a while now, and when Taylor made available a couple of nice reproduction Irish charger heads, I was fresh out of excuses.

The body is 3-4 ounce veg tan cowhide, and the 1/2” wide strap is 7-8 ounce, and attaches with a couple of small brass rings. It’s neatsfoot oiled, dyed dark brown with Fiebings pro dye, and then treated with Aussie Leather Conditioner.

I think it goes nicely with the game gag I made for my turkey gun. I haven’t weighed it, but it probably holds about 1 1/2 pounds of shot.

Nicely done Greg.  I had not given that style much thought, but looks like it will be more comfortable carrying.  Let us know that works out for you down the road.

Thanks guys!  Gary and Bob, so far I’ve only worn it around the house, and so far it seems to ride nicely. I sized the strap so it sits on the flap of my game bag, and helps keep it closed...I need to go back and add a buckle to that flap.

Tim, you know how it is when you get something in your head that just has to come out...from making the pattern to having it all stitched together was barely an afternoon project. Heck, I spent longer rummaging through my junk boxes deciding on screws to attach the collar, than the whole rest of the job... :o

Nice work, very classy. Perfect size too. The bigger tube types weigh a ton when filled with shot.

Hi Greg,

That is some beautiful work.  The design, finish, edges and stitching look top notch. Very very nice.  If I shot smoothbores, I'd be commissioning one of these from you.

God Bless,   Marc

Greg, Is it safe to assume that this is a 2 piece affair??

Thanks again for the kind words guys, I really appreciate it. I can’t take credit for the design, it closely mimics one I found on Pinterest, that was made by Darrell Lang. Darrell attached his strap differently, but overall the shapes are similar.

Gary, yes, the body of the bag is simply two pieces stitched together, with the tabs and rings sewn into the seam at the same time. It was the simplest way I could imagine putting it together. I didn’t wet mold the bag, but you certainly could to gain a little more capacity. I’ll just let it soften and break in with use.

Our muzzleloading club is having a “Vintagers” shoot this weekend...outside hammer guns, black powder, modified 5-stand sporting clays. It’ll be my shakedown cruise for this outfit.
