Some of my covid lockdown horns

Over the last 8-10 years when I would go to Dixon's or other shows, I would usually pick up a horn or two in hopes of someday having time to make up a few powder horns. Well this spring I had the time, fixed my lathe, and had some dry cherry in the wood pile. The top photo is in the order I made them, so I hope they are improving as I go. The 2nd one with the small primer are translucent so you can see the powder. The 4th one down is a natural green horn that I filed a spiral octagon shape on and it was straight enough to turn the tip on the lathe. The pair in the last photo I got from the butcher we deal with and came from the same animal. The tips and the screw plug on the bottom horn are antler. Most of the butts are pinned with thorns and are cherry, except for the first one that is walnut. I got a lot of good information on making these from this forum and want to thank all who have posted the methods and tools that you use. Several horns still need a spout plug yet and the one priming horn will get a push valve. I have never done any leather work, so the straps I bought to use will be a new experience. Any advice or criticism is welcome, Thank You, Roland Finkenbinder

Thanks all for the kind comments, I made 1 horn before these, back about 1985. As you might imagine, it did not look anything like these and the horn bugs got to it in storage over the years. Roland

Roland, thanks for posting this nice work. Looks like you’ve made great use of this forum and the spare time you’ve had this spring. Keep up the good work.

I like the tiny horn at the bottom of the first photo. Neat. God Bless, Marc
