Walter Cain Trigger and Open End Nosecap
« on: August 14, 2009, 08:26:19 PM »
Does anyone have experience in building a gun incorporating a W C Cain single set trigger?  Are there any issues with inletting this trigger since it seems  it may require quite a bit of depth...  I'm thinking of using it on a Rupp rifle I'm building.

Also, regarding the open ended nosecap referred to in another post...  I've read elsewhere that this feature was common on Lehigh guns.   Are there any websites where visual examples of this can be found?  And also examples of Rupp and Moll rifles?

I'm attempting to build my first gun since I took a ribbon at Dixons ten years ago.  It's amazing how much I've forgotten!!  (And how much I'm beginning to recall...)

Thanks in advance

Decker

Eric Kettenberg's site www.erickettenburg.com has some examples of Lehighs with open-ended nosecaps and maybe Allen Martin's does also http://www.allenmartinrifles.com/.

Maybe this address would work for Eric:

I've used the Cain singleset trigger on 3 rifles. It is by far the most difficult of all the triggers I've used to get in good alignment. U usually have to do some  heating and bending on the sear arm. My .54 Beck has one on it and I've used it for 5 yrs now without problems, unless I forget to set it before firing. Many don't like them because they don't fire unless set! But like all things if you use it all the time, it becomes natural.

I installed a single set trigger from Muzzleloader Builder's Supply in my Chambers Virginia rifle.  It fires unset at just a hair over two pounds, and set - mere ounces.  Works very well.

I have used his pistol trigger and it is a very nice single set trigger but I think the design is a little late for what you are looking at. A simple trigger if done right can have a very light trigger pull and would be more in line with the style of your rifle.

Thanks for the replies.  I think I'll follow the advise of the last post and install a non set trigger.  I bought the Cain trigger about ten years ago and have been looking at it ever since trying to figure out what to do with it.  I'll probably offer it up for sale at the next shoot.

Thanks again,

Decker
