.25 stock question
« on: August 17, 2009, 03:29:22 AM »
I'm shaping the forearm of my .25. It's a swamped barrel in a mountain style stock. Notmally I would leave about 2/3 of the ramrod exposed.  I got the ramrod groove sanded down to 1/8" deep, which is 1/2 the ramrod. It looks so shallow compared to what I'm used to, I'm wonderinging if I should only leave half the ramrod exposed since it's so small. What's you thoughts on this?

Thanks,
Bill

I just finished a .29 cal. 3/4  by 44 inch  Mountain Rifle, and I made the ramrod grove 1/3 the depth of the diameter of the ramrod hole.  I liked the looks of it when the rifle was finished.  The only problem I had was that using a 1/4 inch ram rod grove and hole along with a 3/4 across the flats barrel caused me to want to really pull the sides of the stock on the forearm down very thin.  Everything is smaller than I am normally looking at and I worried a bit, but everything worked out great.  The rifle ended up being a very slim and graceful rifle, but I had to down size the late Ketland lock to get the lines to flow through the mortis area and wrist.  Not hard to do, and had no set trigger issues using the Davis #4.  I cut down the levers a bit to allow the sear to not rest on them when unset.
