I have used a leather canteen for years when hunting and really prefer it to other types because it's quiet.  It has started to leak so I'll have to address the problem. This one has a beeswax type lining at present time, but I'd like opinions/ experience  etc from others reference brewers pitch vs beeswax

I would think that if it had beeswax to start with, you'd have a hard time changing that now. 

I'd go back with beeswax. 

Have you asked Darrel?  He may be able to reseal it for you.

Staying with what was used originally is best
 Maybe Darrel can re-wax it for you.
I have one wirh pitch in it and after a couple years, it got a crack inside and started to weep so it can happen with either  sealant. The pitch is quite hard and doesn't like taking a hard bump against a tree  ; )

I have been told that the brewer's pitch can affect the taste of the water, but wanted to hear what others had to say.  I just heated up some water to almost boiling and dumped it in the canteen , waited about 20 seconds and dumped out a lot of the wax, then did it again. Now I'm letting everything dry out after which I'll heat up some beeswax and pour it in making sure it coats all of the interior. That ought to do it.

Bob, I make these also, that's why I was asking wondering if it was one of mine, without a pic could not tell, I take it that it's leaking from a seam?, if it is about a 1/4 cup of HOT beeswax into it, put the plug back in and simply rotate the wax along the seam should do the trick!

sir, I have never made a leather canteen. I have had a few and sold them.
if you could post a photo i maybe able tell you who made them.
a couple of them where lined with brewers pitch and one was bee's wax.
I started one a very long time ago. bought the pitch and everything but never finished it.
still sitting there on the shelf.

I have a nicely made heavy leather canteen made by a fellow named Horsfield, Telkwa, BC, Canada.  It is lined with brewer's pitch, does not leak, and keeps water fresh and cool for at least 10 days.  I've never subjected it to rough use...never been on a horse trip, for example.  Usually, I hang it full from my tipi liner rope, and have a sip whenever I feel dry.

Here is a photo of my canteen. Made by Darrel Lang. It is a real joy to use and is my choice for carrying when hunting. No sloshing noises , which is something my copper canteen is prone to.
It developed a leak at a seam, which I hope my relining will correct. No reason to think it won't.
