Deer rifle

A fella asked me to make for him a rifle for deer hunting. Somewhere when the rifle was close to being finished he backed out. He wanted something plain, nothing but a simple gun. I finished it up and this is what he missed out on. Oddly enough, he supplied the barrel and stock (one of those stocks from Gunstocks Plus out of Oxford, Ohio) The barrel is a 45 Green Mountain, the lock is a Davis as are the triggers. I had him buy the lock and triggers also, he wanted some oddball foreign made junk he found on an auction, but I pushed for something better

I am curious how you did the barrel under rib and ramrod thimbles? It is difficult to see in the pictures. Soldered on metal rib withe the thimbles soldered to that as well?About how much does the rifle weigh?

I really like the silver deer inlay on the cheek piece.  Where did you get that?  Did you make it?

Ez, I made the inlay, it's tedious work, same for inletting it. I had to  make some very tiny chisels.

ScottH, the rib is fastened with pins I made from nails, they are stacked into the barrel and then peened over on the rib. The thimbles are soldered on

I really like the patch box you put the rifle. Nice engraving on it too.

Thanks Brian, that patchbox is one I copied from an antique rifle that showed up at the Log Cabin for repair. I made a  rubbing of it and then used it for a pattern. I took pictures of the engraving and tried to stay as close as possible to the original. There are a couple of lines I incorporated because the picture showed certain things that to me were somewhat confusing. It pays to live close to the Log Cabin shop. Got some more rubbing just last week

I have found that the thinner the nosecap, the less bulkier it is and the better it looks. That's what I prefer, there are others that pour on a nosecap that is long, bulky and they like that. I think that the 'less is more' approach is more artfully appealing, but that's just my opinion

Thanks for posting the additional pics, I really like the second one.  Maybe it’s the roundness of the edges?  That’s the one area of rifles you don’t see Good pics on original rifles, especially halfstock rifles.  The next Ohio halfstock I do will have something like that, just gotta finish up a couple before starting on another project.
