Freddie Harrison’s final gun finally completed
« on: July 17, 2020, 10:15:46 PM »
While at the Alabama Kentucky rifle show last January I happened to notice an unfinished rifle on the table at Harrison Gun stocks. Nathan told me that it was one that Freddie had been working on before falling ill and eventually passing on. I looked at it several times during the weekend and to my surprise, no one bought it. Because I really needed another flintlock I decided to pay the man for it and take it home to Stoner Creek. I hadn’t had it back on my table for 5 minutes and I was approached by a fellow ALR member and all around good guy from Georgia who inquired about my intentions with the rifle and it’s eventual new owner. I told him that I had no immediate plans other than to complete the gun to the very best of my abilities or resources. He ( let’s call him Ron) said that if I ever sell it that he would like first refusal!
For this job to live up to Freddie Harrison standards I decided to call in a few friends on the project.
Keith Vance completed and finished cleanup of the relief carving.
Randall Cantrall stained and finished the stock.
Gary Tucker did the engraving.
I finished all the metal parts.
If you have been in this sport long enough, you will probably know that Freddie was the man when it came to supplying world class curly maple gunstocks but few knew that he was a very accomplished gun maker too. With that thought in mind it was really important to help get his last one right.
Enjoy!!

Oh by the way, I didn’t forget the “little bird” that Freddie engraved on his guns either!!

All of that combined talent couldn't help but make a great rifle. I know Freddie has a smile on his face if he is seeing this. Ron should be grinning like a jackass eating briers. I know I would be if it was coming to my house. Tim

That is so cool.  The story reminds me of the inlet stock blank at Old Salem that never was finished.....and still isn't 200+ years later.

Y'all did a super job Wayne.  It is hard to tell that several artists worked on it, as it all hangs together.  Very nice.

Ron is going to be thrilled.

Thank you for the story and photos.   God Bless,  Marc

Wonderful job and a fine tribute to one of the greats that has been a very important part of this sport of ours. I know Ron will appreciate it and give it a good home.

Every now and again it’s fun to collaborate on a gun project. I’m this instance it was the right gun with the right craftsmen making a gun going to the right owner. This may be one of the highlights for what was otherwise a terrible and tragic year! I hope that the rifle brings him joy for a number of years.

Yes! I had LC Rice tune the original lock for the gun and it got lost (for a very long time) in the postal service. I got tired of waiting and found that brass plate lock in my lock drawer looking for a good home so on she went!
I finally got the original lock back. Someone is going to end up with a real hot-rod of a lock on their gun!!
