Lowell Haarer matched set
« on: June 14, 2019, 02:46:23 AM »
Recently got my new .54 caliber rifle and matching pistol created by Lowell Haarer in Linville, Va. The rifle has a Rice 37-inch swamped barrel and a Jim Chambers Late Ketland lock. The pistol also has a Rice swamped barrel in 13-inch and again has a Chambers late Ketland lock. These both come from his line of "Sparky's Nothing Fancy" line. Scraped wood with an antique patina on the metal. The rifle seems to like 75 grains of Goex 3F, .530 Hornady round ball with a .018 pillow ticking patch. Same load for pistol only with 40 grains of 3F.  I was going for what a 1770's market hunter might have had made for himself. The shorter barrel is for carrying in the rugged canyons and rimrocks of Eastern Oregon.
I am speechless I hope you think so too.

Love them. The rifle reminds me of the love child of your Kibler SMR and something shorter.... Pretty darn cool pewter caps. Color me green.

Very striking piece of wood on that pair - look like a father and son.

To BHMack: here is the Kibler you are referring to. Everyone should own rifles like these.

Amen to that. Your Kibler actually inspired me to order a kit from Jim in .36. I expect it in a month. I’m going to finish it like he did yours with the bone black, long toe plate, and PB. Gorgeous rifle.

Lowell sure knows how to make pleasing rifles.  He is so modest about his talents as well.

That is a slightly different wood finish than I have seen before on Lowell's guns. Did you specify a certain look?  Striking for sure.

God Bless,   Marc

Marcruger: Sorry to be so long in responding to your question.
Lowell's rifles are Revolutionary war period (plus or minus a few years) and represent rifles of the Shenandoah Valley mostly Agusta & Rockbridge Counties. As to the wood even though these 2 are from his "Sparkey's" Nothing Fancy line I asked for an exceptional piece of wood and boy did I get it!

L Meadows: sure here you are.
As I mentioned in the original post this rifle has a 37-inch barrel which is shorter than Lowell normally uses but what I needed for the rugged hunting in Eastern Oregon. Lowell was only to happy to accommodate my needs and wishes.

WOW, Mike - totally gorgeous pair!

I am building a .62 cal Jaeger, and a pair of .54 smooth bore pistols, all with some of Ron Scott's walnut.  I can only hope and pray that mine are half of Mr. Haarrar's work.

Thanks for the pic Mike, I'm looking at 38" barrel, just wanted to see how it looked. Nice set!
