Just wondering how others make and install their Mcaps....the bodies I use are from .04 annealed sheet brass and the end plates from .125 thick brass sheet.
The first thing done is to file in the octagon on the end plate that matches the bbl as closely as possible and the top of the brass is below bbl center.....which takes into account the .04 mat'l thickness and the amount that it's below bbl center. Then the outside contour is finished and this will fit inside the Mcap body. The endplate is placed onto the pinned bbl and a sharp pencil scribes around the end plate's contour. The wood is removed to the line and the Mcap body is then formed w/ the bbl in the stock or a separate form block can be used.....there's excess brass left on the top sides of the body. The end plate and body are then hi temp silver soldered together and the solder matches the color of the brass. Using a disk sander, the end plate end is made square w/ the body and the open end is made parallel w/ the end plate end. The excess brass along the top of the sides of the body is removed.
The Mcap is now pushed onto the stock and Prussian Blue is used to locate the high spots and finally the open end is inletted for a tight fit w/ the wood. The top of the body is now filed to match the radius on the stock. The open end is closed slightly w/ the fingers when a swamped bbl is used. A few spots have epoxy applied , the Mcap pushed home and a copper rivet made from large dia electrical wire is peened in and filed flush. This is how I install a Mcap, but as w/ most things, there are other ways to do it....Fred
