GRS Graver Jig

I haven't picked up my gravers in 10 or so years, so my tools and skills are equally rusty.

Is there a resource guide for the GRS Standard Graver Sharpening Fixture giving details about setting the back screw to achieve steeper belly grinds?  - How much protrusion (and what heel angle) to achieve 130*  for example?

New version of the tool omits the back screw - nothing about it in the current instruction sheet.

Playing around with it, I found setting the heel angle to 20* and raising the back end 5/8" or so will get me close enough, but if the work has already been done and info published, I'd like to have it on hand for future use of other belly angle grinds.

Personally, I have not found that fixture very helpful for much besides doing the face angle of gravers and chisels.

GRS makes a "Dual Angle fixture" with which you can obtain any face, belly, and heel angle your little heart desires.


Lindsay also makes a template system that is not as flexible as the GRS, but it's cheap comparatively speaking, and is super easy to use. Buy the template for the tip angle you want.

Maybe later I will invest in more tooling and jigs, but for the moment, I will make do with equipment already at hand.

The Lindsey Jig may be adequate, but the GRS Tool is obviously superior.

Interestingly, I found a tutorial, with a .dwg file, for making a Lindsey Style set up

The Lindsay jig may be less versatile, but I'm not sure I would consider it inferior to the GRS product.  In fact, many would consider it more convenient and easier to use.

The Lindsay jigs and sharpening system, and he offers many different templates for different shaped gravers, is superb because it is so easy to use that you tend to sharpen your tools more often and when you should.

That website is a little daunting.  Once you figure it out,  it’s not so bad.  Hope this helps.
You’ll need some graver blanks.  You may want to write down the item numbers and a brief description of what you are sure you want to purchase  and then give them a call.  Most of these Muzzleloader businesses have a person who is considerate and easy to work with.

The Lindsay template system is repeatable and reliable, and not complicated at all. 

The GRS looks impressive, because it has all these adjustments. But without hands-on training, the fixture will sit on your shelf of "what I thought I needed".

Then you will go out and buy the Lindsay. (and yes, their website sucks bad, and is very difficult to locate what you want) But the product is super easy to use, and you get reliable cutting tools in minutes. Believe me, in the beginning, you spend most of your time breaking points and sharpening. The Lindsay is the quickest way to a new point.
