making 16 flats??
« on: August 24, 2020, 05:04:21 PM »
Getting close here on a fowler and am wondering?  I want to cit back the corners on the oct part of the barrel to 16 flats, like I see on other fowlers.
Is there any "rule of thumb"  as to how far back, or how much of the oct portion of the barrel this is to be done??
Thanks to all

If you have a fowler in mind, I'd just copy that or something from the same school/area.

I might have to do that.  I was just wondering if there is some kind of ratio?  Like 1/3 or 1/4 the total lenth of the oct part?  Something like that??
Thanks

At the risk of resurrecting the old you-know-what discussion, I’d try 2/5 the length of the flatted section for 16 flats, leaving 3/5 the length as octagon.

⁰I have a couple original  tulle fusil de chasse barrels.  The flats are no more than 2.25inches.  Filed to the point where all 16 flats are the same width.

Thanks to all.  Much appreciated.  If I ever get this project finished I will post pics for opinions.
