Lock moldings

My Armstrong pistol is coming together without any significant problems.  I will be shaping the stock soon.  I want to get this one right. 

The lock moldings?  On this one the front looks like about a 3/8" round profile.  The rear under the tail is not.  I can not visualize the profile from the photo.  What is it supposed to be for both?

Looks to me that it mirrors the lock. If I understand your question correctly

I think of the lock panel at the rear as sitting or glued onto the stock which has an organic, rounded shape. Blend everything then cut the edges (semi-vertical) in at somewhere between 100 and 120 degrees.

I bet some top builders can chime in on how they view it conceptually and execute it. I think Smartdog has a post or tutorial on his shaping approach around the lock panels.

Is there a picture on the auction site that shows the pistol from the top, or bottom? That would give you a better example of the depth of the carving in those areas.
A lot of time, pictures make the carving look much deeper than it actually is.

I am after the shape of the molding in the Z axis as viewed in the photo.  The front of the lock could be done with a rat tail file (rounded).  The section under the   lock tail above the trigger is something else, what is it?

The lock panels have relief moldings all the way around.  The moldings are carved the same as any relief carving meaning they are raised above the surface of the stock all the way around.  The lock panel itself grows out of the relief molding but isn't as high as you would normally expect.  The 3/8" round file would be way too big to form the concave section in the front of the lock panel.  The lock panel only rises above the molding by about 1/16".




The auction site's photos from above and below are difficult to see the edges because of the black background, the lens distortion, and some tight cropping, but I'll show them to give you some idea.
