Fooling around at the forge. Completed this hawk a few days ago. Head was forged using 4140 high carbon steel. Curly Ash haft.

Great looking hawk Bart and I too like the handle.

I like the shape of that one a lot!  Mind if I ask what size stock you started with?

Gregg, with this one I used 1" square stock that was roughly 3.5" in length. The eye was punched using a tapered tear drop shaped drift.. Thank you for your compliments..

that is a beauty, nice forge work on the head and that handle is amazing love the grain and the color.  What did you use to stain the wood and how did you prep it, sand or scrape, etc.?

WH1, Thank you for the kind words. The haft was derived from a kiln dried quarter sawn plank. The wood was finished with scrapers and burnished. Iron nitrate was used to accentuate the curl, followed by some dark brown and amber colored aniline dyes. The dyes were diluted Trans-Tint brand. As far as the black linear grain colors, I use burnt umber powder mixed with my own brew of tinted BLO for the final finish.
