Springfield Armory Model 1816 Flintlock Musket Type One

The first regulation length US Model 1816 muskets, those having 42 inch long barrels, were produced at Springfield in very late 1817. Only a few were made and one survives in the Springfield NHS Museum Collection as SPAR 5383. There is a so-called Artillery musket in the collection with an 1817 dated lock.

I do need to find a copy. My local Meijers used to carry it, but I haven't seen any for sale in many months. I'll check a book store.

I immediately bought Kent J's book. Have a 42" barrel sort-of Springfield M1816 but dated 1817. Originally had an iron pan. Military percussion conversion.

JC--Thanks for the posting. The lockplate marking of "SPRINGFIELD" on your musket is quite rare. When Springfield decided to move the Springfield name to the rear of the lockplate, they apparently did not have the marking dies with the new "SPRING / FIELD / 1817" so for a very brief period they used the "SPRINGFIELD" in an arch until the new dies were ready.

Your musket is what collectors call an 1812 Type IV or 1812/1816 Transition Musket.
