4 bore ?'s

Found a Grudchos and Eggers 4 bore rifle . It has a 23 " oct.to rnd barrel . Number 96 is on side flat .
Also has N.Bedford Mass. on bbl.
I know condition is everything (it is really nice with no rust)
Anybody have any info. on this rifle would be greatly appreciated .

It it actually a rifle? Does the barrel have rifling?

Don't have any photo's but found one on an old James Julia auction . There's has a number 104 on it .
Everything is exactly the same and yes it is rifled . 1.05 " diameter bore . Kind of cool looking down the bore with a flashlight
and not having the light in the way .
The Julia auction rifle sold in 2010 for 8K
Any insight about the collectability or other history of this type of rifle is appreciated .
I will be at the rifle shop tomorrow after noon and will take some pics with the phone .
I can send them to you if you want .

Steve--Your best bet is to post the photos on this Forum. There are many guys on the LRF that have extensive experience with all types of rifles.

 I saw one of these guns years ago in California, and was told its a whale gun. They were used to  finish off whales that had been harpooned and were likely to injure crewmen, or damage the ship. The Bedford whaling fleet sailed out of Bedford, and made their new home in Benicia California, and probably brought some  of these with them.

Read some of the same and that might explain the front end of the stock . Perfectly rounded under as if it sits in a yoke of some sort .
Can I assume the ring under the buttstock is for some sort of retaining device ?
Any idea of value ?
