Late Lehigh rifle

        A little while ago I posted some photos of how I inlet a Lehigh Co. style butt plate.  Tim Crosby asked that I post some photos of the completed rifle when completed.  It is now ready to go to its new home, so here are some photos.     Ron

Lucky, I own an original unsigned Lehigh longrifle that has very similar patchbox, toeplate, and side-plate to yours. Where did you get your idea for this rifle? I also notice that the side plate is partially nailed on with brass nails, so is mine, and the finial on the patchbox is secured with brass nails as well. On mine the brass nails aren’t headed, and are engraved over. My gun also has a fancy single trigger made of brass. My gun is a tapered barrel .45 cal. Smoothbore, that was converted to percussion.

Lucky, by the way, the barrel is marked by its maker that went out of business in 1815.

 I also happened to remember another little oddity of this builder. The wrist inlay is oriented like yours, but mine has the owners initial engraved on it going with the wrist of the gun, to be read from the left side, rather than across, which is more common.

         H.H.  I sent you some info. in a P.M.  By the very shape of the wrist inlay (see wrist inlay in my photos) it would seem easier to engrave initials as you describe.  I am guessing this was a convenience rather than trait of the builder.   
         Rob, yes Brad's Lehigh was the inspiration for this gun.  As soon as I get a little more caught up, I am going to duplicate another of his Lehigh Co. guns...Doing a Haines for Pheasants Forever right now.

 The gun that was copied has some very distinctive features. I know this because I own an old wreck of a longrifle with many if not all of those same features. Those features are not common to guns made by Rupp. Although I have never found another gun with as many similarities to mine as the one Ron modeled his after, I have seen pictures of a gun with some of the features that was signed by a gunsmith named Baer.

Shreck, there seems to have been quite a few of them, but most were part time gunsmiths, that didn’t seem to sign much of their work. Les Baer the current builder of unmentionable handguns of the future is a descendant of this family.
