Hello friends,

I picked up a used rifle recently.  It is a .54 cal flintlock, sort of a Southern poor boy style.  I like it very much.

It has a Siler lock and a Green Mountain barrel

The vent liner was screwed in too deep and it made it impossible to clean the breech face.  I tried to remove it but I made a mess of things.

Who would you recommend that I turn to for help?

It should not be that big of a problem. Drill out the liner just large enough for a screw extractor to fit and simply unscrew it. If you lived next door to me we could do it in ten minutes.

It sounds as though the length was never trimmed. I’d remove the breechplug and take a good look. You can probably use a half round needle file to carefully remove the excess.

The good news is that if you feel it is too much for you to do, you only have to ship the barrel to a gunmaker for revisions, not the whole gun.   God Bless,   Marc

 It wouldn’t be the first vent liner, or breech plug for that matter, that I have encountered with loc-tite on the threads. A close inspection with a magnifying glass for a tell tale ring of red wouldn’t hurt.
