"Vegetarian" Shooting Bag
« on: November 03, 2020, 06:08:37 AM »

While most of my hunting bags are made from leather I wanted to try making one out of fabric for a change.  This is my personal rig for a 20 gauge trade gun.  The bag strap is woven hemp while the body is an accurate copy of an 18th century linsey-woolsey striped pattern and a lining of homespun linen with a pewter button.  The powder horn strap is fingerwoven wool and glass beads.  Powder horn is an original dated 1793 horn.  I can't recommend wearing it whilst turkey hunting! ;)

Very nice. If I were lucky enough to have that, I'd risk using it during turkey season, lol.

Where did you get the lindsey-woolsey?

That looks great to my eye!  I haven’t branched into textiles yet, except for a few woven straps, but it’s an area I need to explore. Thanks for sharing that beautiful work!

I really like cloth bags and the one you've made looks fantastic.

The linsey-woolsey came from a textile researcher and weaver 20 + years ago but alas, I can't recall her name.  I was doing research on fabrics traded in the Southeast and she was a great source for 18th century textiles.   I have a few yards of it left and figured I'd make a bag or two from it.

I like the bag, but I don't get why you wouldn't wear it for turkey hunting?

Reds and blues closely follow a gobblers head coloration especially in the bush would be my concern.

George,
I have an old bag that is lined with wool. I have found that reaching into the bag on cold days, slows the shooting process while my fingers warm up a bit.

There were a ton of cloth shooting bags during the period. The issue is is due to the nature of cloth it degrades rapidly compared to leathers and hence don’t survive well for 250 years or more.

I'm digging the "herringbone" pattern of the hemp strap. I have a sample of a chevron pattern I'd like to duplicate for a bag or horn strap but I have no clue how to go about weaving it on my loom. I am guessing I need to use the tablet/card method which I am pretty much unfamiliar with.
