Dovetail file sale
« on: February 04, 2019, 05:42:47 PM »
The Brownells Dovetail file seems to get good recommendations here.

I actually ordered one the other day. Might have to play the lottery...they didn't process my order until today and they are now on sale for around $35.  Free shipping over $50 promo too...

Figured I'd pass it on incase anyone else needs one.

$35 for a dovetail file!! And that is the sale price? Sure glad I was sitting down. I made one out of a used $3.00 Nicholson triangular file about 5 years ago and it's still going strong. Just use it to open up dovetails cut with a milling machine but still I can't understand why so expensive!

And only one side's got teeth on it!  ::) It should be 1/3 the price of a regular one.

Once you've used one, you'll understand why!  I've had one for over 20 years.  Still going strong.

Ditto!!  I've got both the coarse and fine ones.  If you were to buy only one, I suggest the coarse one.

40 some odd years ago when I was still in High School, my mom & dad bought me a basic gunsmithing tool kit from Brownell's for Christmas. One of the items in the kit was a dovetail file. I still have and use this file (as well as all the other tools in the kit). The file that came with the kit was the fine version and I recently bought the coarse one to compliment it.

Came today.

I bought the fine cut figuring we don't really cut much on a dovetail.   Not sure how much more aggressive the #2 cut is...this thing is pretty dang fine.  But I still feel it'll do the job. And cutting slower probably isn't a bad thing in my hands.

It's actually made by Grobet and definitely feels like it's quality.

Edit---

Didn't cut a dovetail but ran the file a couple times where a front sight is getting cut in the real near future.  Definitely cuts more than I imagined it would.  I think it'll suffice just dandy for my needs.
