Rifle for a 4 year old
« on: November 18, 2020, 12:57:56 AM »
This is a rifle thst Howard built for his 4 year old grandson. He sent me photos and I edited them (to better fit) and posted some of them below.

Here is what Howard told me about the rifle:

Quote
Dennis, Here is the rifle that I built for my grandson Reuben. I used a
Ed Rayl .32 cal. barrel, a original lock.  I made all the hardware &
built the rifle from a chunk of maple I had around here for several
years. I had Marvin Kemper to route the barrel channel for me as he has
a set up to do this in a very short time.  I couldn't find set triggers
that I like or the hardware for the rifle & I made them from wrought
iron. The pipes are .25 in the inside dia.  If you think these pictures
are good enough & worthy enough to post then you can.  I have more than
100 hours in this project. I made 3 guards & this was the best of the
three. I made 2 rear ramrod pipes & went back to the first one. I made
two patchboxs as it was horrible to make these knuckles & get it to
function the way I wanted. The barrel is 46 inches long.  I have only made six rifles & pistols before.

What a good looking rifle Howard, I know your grandson will love it. Not bad for your 6th rifle, if you keep practizing you might make a decent gunsmith one day. ;D For those that don't know Howard and I are good friends and he is one of the most talented fella's I know.

Love the rifle

I was contacted about the patchbox that I selected on my grandsons rifle. Here are several close ups of the knuckles  on the hinge. After handling thousands of old originals  I have only have seen two originals with this configuration. This is a very unique box.  The hinge itself is located under the lid instead on top.  I wanted my grandson to have something to have so he can remember me by. Special thanks to Chris Hirsch in Texas for sending me a good image  of 3 alligators to chose from for  the cheek piece. Also thanks to Louie Parker for his encouragement  as I was  going along on the rifle. Thank you Dennis for posting the pictures & thank you Jim Parker for just likeing my stuff & me.

Very cool Howard. A gun like that appeals to me more than almost any type. Well finished. Super.

That is a dramatically distinctive longrifle, and I love the lines and inlays.  That deep stain is really appealing.  God Bless,   Marc
