8 pt with a .45
« on: December 12, 2020, 04:27:05 AM »

First day of muzzleloader season in Southern Illinois. I used a .45 caliber rifle I made that is a copy of my GGGrandfathers rifle. Used a .445 roundball, denim patch, bear oil lube and 60 grains 3F Old Eynesford.
He was angling toward me at 40 yards. The shot anchored him on the spot.

Congrats!!  That buck should feel honored to die by that rifle!   ;)

Nice buck and shot with a rifle that was of the type common in Illinois in the mid 19th century. Were you at Shawnee National Forest or private ground?

I was on private ground near the north end of the Shawnee forest area. We can see the hills from our ground. Movement had been really slow for the past week. I hunted really hard during the 4 day second season and never saw a buck. Hunted all day yesterday and this was the only deer I saw, and right at sun down. The deer had a really intense rut this year and I guess needed to rest up a while. I had been seeing many bucks each time I went out in the archery season.

I made the rifle a couple years ago using an original leman lock, butt plate  and trigger guard. Made the triggers and used Illinois maple for the stock. I will give it to a nephew now that it has some history.

Congrats!  Were you able to recover the ball or was it a complete pass-trough?

I didn’t find the ball. It did not pass through. The shot was quartering to, and I think the ball ended up under the far shoulder blade. It was dark when I skinned and quartered the deer, and I think it got lost.

Better view of the rifle. I got the lock from a member here. No half cock notch on the tumbler, so I don’t cap until i get ready to shoot, or am sitting stil.

Fantastic buck and rifle. The rifle looks well executed.
While it has nice graceful lines it also shows that is it all business.
The history on the rifle makes a perfect story. Thanks for sharing.

That ball will look like it was flattened with a hammer. Every 45 ball I've dug out of deer were like that. About the size of a nickel to a quarter.

nice deer and a perfect shot. Always liked the .45 for deer. easy to get enough velocity to flatten the ball and little recoil. In my experience with southern Oregon blacktails, either a 45 or a 40 will penetrate completely through the chest, even if you hit shoulder blade or spine. And yes, the ball will be flat, and usually weigh about the same as when it left the barrel.

My experience as well.  The .45 is my favorite.

That's a fine looking rifle, too.
