Turkey Leg Bone Knife...Final Decision Finished
« on: December 20, 2020, 05:34:28 AM »
Need y'alls opinion. I just forged up another Wild Turkey femur knife like the one I gave to the NWTF auction this past spring, That one hade a poured pewter bolster. This one right now is just the turkey leg bone and knife blade. Trying to decide if I should leave it as is or add a poured pewter bolster like the auction knife? It is finished and fitted but not glued together yet. Then I need to decide if I'm going to antique the bone & blade this time?

Original NWTF Auction knife...

This is the Turkey knife I'm trying to decide how I want to finish...

Pewter bolster for sure.  My vote.

I think it looks okay without the bolster, but, I would think the bolster would protect the edges of the bone end from chipping.
I'd like it either way you finish it though.

I like the bolster.  Unless the entire handle is filled with epoxy, I'd be concerned because bird bones are generally thinner than mammal bones and easier to break.  James Levy

The knife as is looks like it is in need of something -- nice blade style -- that turkey bone handle - well let's just say it's not MY cup of tea but it would look a LOT better with a bolster than without one ;)

Bolster YES! Patina the heck out of everything on this type of knife.

Since the knife was all finish fitted, I decided to go without the poured pewter bolster.  I still have a couple more wild turkey femurs so I'll eventually make another one with a pewter bolster.

Turned out good even without the bolster. How long did it end up being?

OAL 7 1/4" with 3 1/4" blade. Next turkey leg knife with pewter bolster, then I'll forget about turkey legs for awhile :)
